Ergonomic Tips for Working Solo with a Rear Delivery Unit

Rear delivery units are great—when you have an assistant. But when you're working solo? They can be a nightmare for ergonomics. These setups are designed for four-handed dentistry, which means they don’t always support the best posture or workflow for clinicians working alone.

If you’re constantly twisting, reaching, or feeling the strain of working with a rear delivery unit on your own, don’t worry—there are ways to make it work better for you!

Here are a few simple adjustments that can improve your posture and reduce strain (read to the end for a video demonstrating these tips):

1️⃣ Swivel the Chair and Move the Bracket Table Over

Instead of contorting yourself to reach instruments behind you, reposition your bracket table to minimize excessive twisting. Swivel your chair and bring your setup closer so that your tools are within easy reach. This small adjustment can significantly reduce unnecessary strain on your back and shoulders.

2️⃣ Practice Hand-Passing Instead of Twisting

Without an assistant, it’s easy to fall into the habit of constantly turning and reaching for your instruments. Instead, try the hand-passing technique—pick up and transfer instruments using minimal movement rather than twisting your body. Keeping your motions controlled and efficient will help protect your posture.

3️⃣ Consider Using a Mobile Cart

A mobile cart can be a game-changer for solo clinicians. Placing your instruments on a rolling cart beside you allows for better balance and accessibility without the need to reach behind constantly. If you’re looking for an affordable option, I’ve linked a few budget-friendly carts in my “Dental Must-Haves” Amazon list to help you get started.
